Editor's Choice: Steam v020 1653101165

Steam is a revolutionary program that does away with the need for computer game stores, CDs and other things that prolong the agony for gamers. In the past, as soon as a new game came out, they needed to go to the shop and buy it, but not all stores sold computer games, so they had to find a specialist one that did, and then they had to take the game home, install the CD and only then, after several hours, could they enjoy their game. Steam makes that process quicker and simpler. Just browse through the games on offer and then buy and download the one that you want. That’s it, it couldn’t be more simpler.

Steam have games for both Windows and Mac Operating Systems and their huge collection of games are listed in a number of categories, from Sports Games to Action Games and everything in between. Steam also has a number of add-ons and Indie games, and they offer competitive prices on all of their games.

Downloads games onto desktops

Created by Valve, Steam allows gamers to but their games online and download them directly onto their desktops. Valve use the software to release their own popular titles, such as Left 4 Dead, but they also publish a huge list of titles from other game developers, including all of the biggest selling PC and Mac games of the moment. Steam is the program that many gamers waited a long time for, and for the most part it is everything that they wanted, but there are a few issues with it.

One of the few downsides of the Steam store is that it is very difficult to get a refund from them and they have a strict “no refund” policy, which is a very odd tact is for such a large and modern company. This means that if you buy a game by mistake, or if you only discover that the game doesn’t run on your computer after you buy it, then tough luck! Another problem is the DRM, which restricts users from playing the same game on different computers and can also require that you be logged online when you are playing the game. This is annoying, especially if you don’t have internet access when you want to play the game, but this is not entirely the fault of Steam and more often than not the developers of the games are at fault.

Despite these flaws, Steam is a great idea and it has changed the way we buy and play computer games.
